The Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research conducts basic research on plants and their development using a wide variety of methods, in particular molecular genetics, genomics, imaging processes, computational biology, and biochemistry. Our goal is the deep and detailed understanding of fundamental mechanisms in plant biology, which may also then be used to develop innovative strategies for plant breeding.

Bioimage Analyst (m/f/div)

Central Microscopy (CeMic; ) is the microscope core facility of the Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research (MPIPZ). CeMic manages the microscope equipment of the MPIPZ, trains and supervises researchers in the operation of the instruments, and consults and advises researchers on imaging techniques as well as image processing and analysis. The imaging requirements range from the whole plant level (with objects as large as several centimeters) to molecular details (like protein complexes at the nanoscale level). To cover this size range, the entire spectrum of imaging technologies – from a simple stereomicroscope to a sophisticated super-resolution light microscope and electron microscope (both transmission and scanning) – is available. CeMic also implements new sample preparation and imaging protocols to exploit the full potential that the technologies of the various microscopes provide.

Bioimage analysis workflows have become increasingly complex and the correct setup and practice requires knowledge of advanced bioimage analysis tools. We are seeking a dedicated and skilled bioimage analyst to implement bioimage analysis workflows tailored for examining image data of research projects within the MPIPZ. The ideal candidate has a strong background in image analysis, computational biology, and a passion for advancing scientific research based on innovative imaging techniques.

Task description:
  1. Assisting with setting up workflows for image processing and analysis for both light and electron microscopy data
  2. Advising and guidance in using image processing and archiving software
  3. Exploring bioimage analysis tools and advertise them to researchers at the MPIPZ
  4. Organizing trainings for tools available to researchers at the MPIPZ
  5. Advising and guidance on image acquisition
To accomplish these tasks, we are looking for a bioimage analyst with a background in (plant) biology and a profound knowledge of available image processing software and tools, with an emphasis on applications developed for analysis of plant specific processes. The candidate should also have a profound knowledge and experience with acquisition of fluorescent images using fluorescence microscope systems. A plus would be experience with the image archiving system OMERO and basic programming skills.

Qualifications:
  • PhD or equivalent in bioinformatics, computational biology, biology, or a related field
  • Proficiency in image analysis software (e.g. ImageJ, Imaris, Huygens, arivis, and others)
  • Experience with statistical analysis and data visualization tools
  • Extended experience in microscopy
  • Background in plant cell biology (desirable but not essential)
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
