The Faculty of Medicine is an integral part of the Otto-von-Guericke-University Magdeburg and cooperates with the Magdeburg University Hospital A.ö.R. in research, teaching and patient care. The latest findings in medical research and state-of-the-art equipment are used in diagnostic procedures and patient care. The main research foci of the faculty are "Immunology” including “Molecular Medicine of Inflammation" and "Neurosciences".

The Section for Clinical and Experimental Sensory Physiology at the Department of Ophthalmology (University of Magdeburg) is seeking a PhD-candidate. The appointment will commence in January 2025.
About the Project:
- The project focuses on medical digitalization to revolutionize ophthalmological research and care through telemedicine and artificial intelligence (AI). Key objectives include:
- Developing methods and creating a database for AI-driven telemedicine in ophthalmology, addressing diseases like glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration.
- Investigating disease progression and underreporting in underserved areas through broadband ophthalmologic screening.
- Understanding unrecognized and delayed disease progression to inform prevention and therapy strategies.
- Establishing a digital platform for medical care, including eye diagnostics and retinal blood vessel analysis for cardiovascular health.
Candidate Profile:
We are seeking motivated individuals with:- An MSc in data science, biomedical engineering, (computational) neuroscience, or a related field.
- Experience in medical imaging analysis using AI techniques.
- Strong programming skills (Python, R, and/or MATLAB) and familiarity with quantitative neuroscience.
