Post-Doc (f/m/d, Nr. 710-24)
EG/salary group 13 TV-L

The position is part of the Collaborative Reseach Center/Transregio CRC/TRR 270 – "Hysteresis Design of Magnetic Materials for Efficient Energy Conversion – HoMMage". The research topic is in the expanding field of computational design of materials for efficient and environment-friendly magnetocaloric solid-state cooling systems. Based on modern electronic structure calculations, CRC/TRR 270 project B06 contributes to the fundamental understanding of the coupling between magnetic and lattice degrees of freedom and their contribution to latent heat, hysteresis and order of the phase transition. We develop strategies how to improve the functional properties of various classes of materials by chemical modification or external stimuli.

Start: as soon as possible
Duration: until 2027-12-31
Working time: 39 h 50 min (100 %, part time employment is possible)
Application deadline: 2024-12-25
Reference number: 710-24

Your tasks

  • You carry out density functional theory and molecular dynamics calculations for the understanding and development of novel magnetocaloric materials.
  • You maintain and install the relevant software for the project on the respective computer systems.
  • You present the advance of the project at local and international conferences and publish the results in the relevant journals in the field.

Your profile

  • very good PhD degree in Physics, Materials Science or Theoretical Chemistry
  • advanced knowledge of density functional theory, solid state physics and thermodynamics (in particular band structures, phonons and magnetism)
  • experience with high-performance computing
  • fundamental knowledge of Linux and programming (Bash, Python, Fortran, or alike)
  • experience in classical molecular dynamics and/or Monte Carlo approaches are an advantage
In addition, we expect a strong interest in scientific qualification and a very good conduct of the English language (orally and written). Conduct of the German language is an advantage.

We offer

  • an active, interdisciplinary research field between Physics, Chemistry and Engineering within the CRC/TRR 270 with its main locations in Darmstadt and Duisburg-Essen
  • a responsible job with great creative potential in a dynamic international team contributing to the development of novel materials for energy conversion
  • access to modern high-performance computers
  • further offers for advanced training and career development from the CRC/TRR 270 and the University of Duisburg-Essen,
  • family friendliness through childcare and counselling for your care responsibilities
  • excellent public transport connections and free parking
  • attractive sports and health programs
  • the possibility of mobile working
