PostDoc for Ice sheet modeling in the Earth System (d/f/m)
BackgroundThe Paleoclimate Section of the Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) in Bremerhaven, Germany, is seeking a motivated and talented Postdoctoral Researcher to join our team. This position is part of the EU Horizon-funded project LinkIng and QUantifying the Impacts of climate change on inlanD ICE, snow cover, and permafrost on water resources and society in vulnerable regions (LIQUIDICE).
You will:
- Adapt the existing ice sheet-atmosphere coupling to integrate with the new atmospheric model OpenIFS
- Adapt the dynamic ice shelf-cavity geometry coupling from ISSM-FESOM to PISM-FESOM
- Enhance the model's restart procedure to account for changes in ice shelf morphology and ocean cavity structure over time
- Utilize the modified Earth System Model (AWI-ESM) to perform high-resolution climate projections extending to the year 2500
- Investigate the long-term evolution of ice-ocean interactions using these simulations
- Provide downscaled data to observation-focused project partners for collaborative research
- A PhD in oceanography, glaciology, climate science, geology, or a closely related field
- Experience in numerical modeling, particularly in atmosphere-ocean-ice interactions
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Fortran, C++, or other compiled languages
- Proficiency in Python, R, or other scripting languages used for data analysis and processing
- Experience with high-performance computing (HPC)
- Very good knowledge of English (C1)
- Proven ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team
- A solid publication record in peer-reviewed scientific journals, particularly in relevant fields such as Earth system model development and coupled climate dynamics

This is a full-time position, limited to 3 years. It is also suitable for part-time employment. The salary will be paid in accordance with the Collective Agreement for the Public Service of the Federation (Tarifvertrag des öffentlichen Dienstes, TVöD Bund), up to salary level 13. The place of employment will be Bremerhaven.
