The Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies (MPIfG) conducts basic research on the governance of modern societies. It aims to develop an empirically based theory of the social and political foundations of modern economies by investigating the interrelation between social, economic, and political action. Building on the disciplinary traditions of sociology and political science, the Institute鈥檚 research program aims to combine and develop the approaches of new economic sociology and comparative and international political economy.
We are currently seeking to recruit a
Postdoctoral Researcher (f/m/d) in the social sciences to join our Lise Meitner Research Group on Technology and Sovereignty.
The starting date for the position is October 1, 2025, or by agreement. This new research group, directed by Dr. Carola Westermeier, will focus on technologies and infrastructures in the context of geopolitical tensions and heightened security. It analyzes how reconfigurations of socioeconomic relations that are engendered by articulations of security manifest in concrete technologies and how technologies are in turn shaped by efforts to achieve digital, technological and monetary sovereignty. Possible research fields include digital currencies, techno-politics, economic statecraft, and (digital) infrastructures in international relations, among others. As a postdoctoral researcher in the new group, you will work during a two鈥憏ear contract on a project of your choosing within the group鈥檚 research field. The MPIfG offers postdoctoral researchers excellent working conditions in an attractive, international research environment. Salary and benefits are according to the collective agreement for the public service (TV枚D E 13). Our postdoctoral researchers are expected to reside in the Cologne area and work at the Institute so that they can participate fully in the intellectual life of the MPIfG. Scholars of all nationalities who successfully completed their doctoral degree no longer than three years before the start date of their contract with the MPIfG are eligible to apply. The successful candidate will be chosen on the basis of an outstanding doctorate in sociology, political science, or economics, scholarly excellence, a research proposal outlining a project to be pursued at the MPIfG (up to 3 pages), and a job interview.
