The Faculty of Medicine of Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) invites applications for a
W2 Professorship in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
as of the earliest possible date. Reference is made to § 67 Para. 7 Hessian Higher Education Act (HessHG) and to the conditions of employment based on § 68 HessHG. Proficient knowledge of German is expected.Duties:
You represent the entire spectrum of biochemistry and molecular biology in research and teaching. You should be an internationally recognized personality whose research focuses on the investigation of disease-relevant molecular mechanisms and whose research ties in with existing research priorities at JLU.
You will independently acquire further research projects, in particular DFG-funded collaborative projects (e.g. research groups, collaborative research centers/transregios (DFG project category)). Further national and international collaborations are also expected. Your collaboration in the research networks of the JLU (focus area “Cardiopulmonary system (Heart/Lungs)-, area of potential -Infections, inflammations and active ingredients-) as well as into the faculty-s accent areas (“Translational oncology-, “Experimental and applied neuroscience-, “Reproduction- and “Repair and regeneration-) are expected. The research is therefore compatible with existing collaborative research projects at JLU – in particular, the Cluster of Excellence Cardio-Pulmonary Institute (CPI), the German Center for Lung Research (DZL) and the German Center for Infection Research (DZIF) as well as other externally funded collaborative research projects in which the faculty is involved. In addition, cooperation with the University Center for BioMedical Informatics in the field of digital medicine and big data analysis is expected as well as cooperation in the Giessen Graduate Centre for the Life Sciences (GGL), the structured doctoral programme (JLU TRAINEE) and in the clinician scientist programme (JLU CAREER). You are also expected to contribute to the planning, development and design of new study programmes at JLU and its Faculty of Medicine and to be committed to establishing and maintaining international cooperation.
Your teaching commitment of 8 semester hours per week covers the pre-clinical section of the training of students in the subjects of medicine and dentistry. Furthermore, participation in the Master's degree programme in Biology is desired. In addition to imparting theoretical knowledge, your teaching activities will also focus on the independent planning, implementation and assessment of biochemical studies.
The universities of Giessen and Marburg and the University of Applied Sciences in Central Hessen are working together in a research alliance (Research Campus of Central Hessen) as a structured cooperation based on coordinated priorities. It is expected that the applicant shows cooperativeness to university and department-wide collaborative projects.
Requirements:
Prerequisites for the position include a successfully completed university education in medicine or in the field of natural sciences, the ability to scientific work for the fulfilment of the tasks according to § 67 Para. 1 HessHG, usually proven by an outstanding and relevant doctorate, and excellent additional academic achievements (e.g. proven by habilitation or relevant, international recognized publications). You should demonstrate success in the independent acquisition of external funding.
In addition, proof of a special pedagogical aptitude is required as a qualification to represent the specialist field in academic teaching and doctoral training with great commitment and in its full scope. You should be able to demonstrate international cooperation experience and the expectation of a corresponding commitment at JLU. You should also be internationally recognized in your field of research and have experience in leading a working group.
Relevant teaching experience is required. You must demonstrate the qualifications and previous experience in curricular teaching for the subject of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in its entirety in your application.
The integration of gender aspects in research and teaching is explicitly desired.
In case the candidate exceeds the basic age limit of 50 years, a civil servant appointment under § 66 Para. 3 sentences 2 and 3 Hessian Higher Education Act (HessHG) in conjunction with § 11 Hessian Career Regulation (HLVO) requires a specific functional interest.
