Augsburg University Hospital offers almost all medical specialties for the approximately two million inhabitants of the administrative district of Swabia. As the only center for maximum care, the University Hospital treats a very large number of patients with an exceptionally wide range of diseases in outpatient and inpatient care. This enables the creation of structured patient registers and environment-focused care research with the development of disease-specific early warning systems.
The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Augsburg announces a permanent position of a
W3 University professor (m/f/d)
Environmental Epidemiology
The professorship is linked to the further development of the EHS research focus at the Faculty of Medicine.
The University of Augsburg would like to recruit an outstanding and internationally visible personality with leadership skills who has demonstrated excellent research achievements in the advertised subject area. Applicants are expected to have an independent scientific profile in the field of environmental epidemiology. The position holder should research complex, multifactorial relationships between the environment (exposure) and health (reaction), contribute to answering the question of what influence exposures have on the development and progression of diseases from a spatial and temporal perspective, and derive suitable preventive measures from this. The term environment is primarily aimed at physical environmental factors (soil, water, organisms, air), whereby the immanent interactions between physical environmental factors and social determinants should ideally also be addressed. Non-communicable cardiovascular, cerebro-vascular and neuro-degenerative diseases as well as infectious diseases can be considered when looking at the endpoints in the health sector. Methodologically, multivariate correlation and regression analytical approaches as well as methods from the field of machine learning will be used to model the relationships between known environmental factors and disease progression or endpoints. Data from existing cohorts (NAKO, KORA, SCHANA) can be applied for and used for this purpose. Participation in the establishment of new cohorts and in further cross-site registry studies is expected. This range of methods should be supplemented by biomarker research and epigenetic analyses.
In addition, the research activities of the post holder should in particular reflect links with the existing professorships in the EHS area and with the clinical disciplines. The establishment of collaborations with the Institute of Theoretical Medicine and the research focus Medical Information Sciences should be sought. Close cooperation with institutions at the university that conduct research in the fields of environment or health (IGUA, ZfK, WZU, ZIG) is expected. Key selection criteria are success in acquiring third-party funding and high-ranking publications. The ability and willingness to work interdisciplinary in research networks of the University or the University Hospital Augsburg is required. Due to the position holder's involvement in medical education, special commitment and broad experience in modern competence-based teaching, including the use of blended learning formats, are required and must be reflected in a specific teaching concept. Proof of a didactic qualification is desirable.
Requirements for employment are a completed university degree related to Environment and Health or Public Health, several years of experience as a scientist, and proven teaching experience in the advertised subject area. Special aptitude for scientific work, which is usually demonstrated by the quality of a doctorate, as well as additional scientific achievements, which may have been achieved through a habilitation in the advertised subject area, as part of a junior professorship or through equivalent scientific achievements (possibly also outside the university sector). The leadership of a junior research group constitutes an equivalent academic achievement under the conditions specified in Art. 98 para. 10 sentence 5 BayHIG.
For the performance of the duties of the professorship, a civil service employment relationship is envisaged if the corresponding requirements are met. Applicants must not have reached the age of 52 at the time of appointment.
